Well, that just fucks my timeline all to hell.

ETA: Oh, screw it -- I'm keeping my old date, which puts Albus's birth in 1845.

Also, have a cookie:Collapse )

Title: Ad Familiares I
Author: Ibycus

Pairing or Character(s): Albus Dumbledore, Gellert Grindelwald.
Disclaimer: Not mine.

...even after they'd spent all day in discussion -- both such brilliant young boys, they got on like a cauldron on fire -- I'd sometimes hear an owl tapping at Gellert's bedroom window, delivering a letter from Albus! An idea would have struck him and he had to let Gellert know immediately!

I'm working on another fic, but it's coming slowly, being more about Deep Philosophical Questions than porn & other easy persiflage. In the meantime, I will write Black & Blue snippets concerning an historical event, person, or question of your choice. If you're wondering what happens to Lenin in the B&Blueniverse, or how WWI worked, or the bomb, or something totally unrelated, ask and ye shall receive.

JKR on Snape: He wanted Lily and he wanted Mulciber too.

Because girl!Mulciber is love. I imagine her looking something like Nora Zehetner or Ginnifer Goodwin. Your mileage may vary.

Questions for JKR

Jul. 29th, 2007 | 01:28 pm
mood: amusedamused

My little sister (age: 14; mind: regrettably clean) informs me that JKR is having a live chat to which we can submit questions. She has already asked what Ginny does for a living and what, exactly, the Veil is.

I would suggest the following:

1. What the hell kind of person names their kid Scorpius?
2. What the fuck was up with all that wandering through England in a tent shit? Bo-oring.
3. When Albus and Gellert had sex, who was on top?
4. Why is Ron Weasley such a douchebag?
5. You only like Dumbledore because Richard Harris and Michael Gambon are hot, right?
6. No, seriously. Was Albus fucking Gellert or vice versa?
7. OBHWF? Really?
8. Scorpius. You're kidding.

What else shall we add?

[META] The Black & Blueniverse

Jul. 28th, 2007 | 05:33 pm
mood: contemplativecontemplative

Why Black & Blue? Well, it sounds cool. It lets me say awesome shit like "The Black & Blueniverse." Bruises, obviously. Blue is associated with sadness, of course, but also with authority, conservatism, the status quo, realpolitik world government (vide the UN flag, bluewashing). The fifth chakra, Vishuddha, which chooses between right and wrong, is blue. Black stands for secrecy and ambiguity and revolution and anarchy. (Also fascism, but that's another post.) This is a dark universe.

But not, I think, as dark as our own.

For me, that's the most fascinating of questions: freedom or stability? Liberalism or authority? Are horrors justified if they're for the greater good? (Note, please, that I make no claim that the various horrors of the real 20th century were for the greater good.) I don't pretend to have the answers, but that's what I want to explore. What happens when genuinely good people sacrifice their morality and do terrible things to make life better for others? It's that old utilitarian hypothetical (Quick! There's a train coming down the track and it's going to hit five children! You can flip a switch and direct it to another track, where there's only one child! Do you?) times ten thousand.

How long can one do terrible things, knowing that they're terrible, but that not doing them would be worse? If, by killing a thousand -- even a hundred -- innocent people, you could prevent the slaughter of ten thousand somewhere else, would you do it? And again, and again, and again? How long until you begin to enjoy doing it, and forget that what you are doing is a horror? What kind of a person does it take to do it, without forgetting the horror? What kind of a toll does it take on his soul?

Because this is a universe full of the evil and the banal. Dissidents are sent to Nurmengard. Protesters are slaughtered. Muggle-born wizards are taken from their families as children.

But there is no Holocaust. Russia is ruled by a Tsaritsa. Father Josef Dzhugashvili has never considered the name Stalin. Hiroshima and Nagasaki flourish uninterrupted into the 21st century.

Oh, there is war. There is death. But where there is hunger it's only waiting for supper; where there is disease it can mostly be cured with potions.

No one is free. Muggles are second-class citizens.

But, Dumbledore asks, aren't they better off as second-class citizens under his benevolent authority than they ever were free?

I don't have an answer. But that's what Black & Blue is about.
